Bistro talkin’…

May 9, 2010

Had lunch at the Couqley in The Alley in Gemmayzé yesterday with a friend. What’s the food like? she asked.  Yaani, bistro style, I said.

The location is cozy – in an alley tucked away from the pollution on the main street (near a Tanning Salon – in Lebanon for Bob’s sake?!). I suggested we have some bubbles – a couple of “Jacqueline Rosé” sparkling wine – a combo of cinsault and cabernet franc – nothing to rave about but sort’a did the job. I love a glass of bubbly on a hot day especially when you’re catchin’ up with a friend. (Bubblies in general I’ll rave about another time).

The food was not bad but I can’t say I was blown away by anything: lentil salad, Salad Berger, and spinach ravioli. Well… “yaani” was spot on. Maybe next time it’ll be “yaani, not bad”… will go again but not any time soon. The Joseph Drouhin Chablis was a good accompaniment (dry, fruity and citrusy – cant really go wrong there). We almost fell asleep right at our table, though, so rushed away without coffee and dessert.

For now, having that very-expensive-but-not-worth-it cup of Jamaican coffee I was talking about yesterday… Not much body and a little on the bitter side. I did get a bit of Hawaiin coffee, however, that I’ll try tomorrow.

Le Couqley is open all week for Lunch and Dinner. Serves Brunch on Sundays. Reservations: 01-442678
